Van der Graaf Drum Motors
A drum motor puts the motor, gearbox, and bearings inside the conveyor pulley. Nothing hangs off the frame, nothing needs guarding, and the whole drive is sealed against washdown. That is why they end up in food plants, packing sheds, and wineries where a conventional external drive would not survive the wash cycle.

Series 01 · SSV
SSV Series, food, beverage, and pharmaceutical
4.0 to 8.5 inches, 0.11 to 7.5 HP. This is the series that matters for processing and packing. Van der Graaf builds it from 316 stainless steel, rates the sealing system IP69K, and specifies it for pressure washdown up to 3,000 psi. They claim it cuts the water and time used for washdown by half compared with an external drive.
Lagging is USDA and FDA approved nitrile in blue or white, in plain, diamond, or chevron patterns. Belt profiles can be machined directly onto the drum, onto a removable stainless drive sleeve, or driven through CleanFlow sprockets for modular, wire mesh, and thermoplastic belting. Profiles are available for Intralox, Habasit, Wire Belt, Gates, Cambridge, and Volta.

Series 02 · Standard
Standard Series, unit and material handling
4.0 to 12.5 inches, 0.11 to 15 HP. Packaging, warehousing, parcel, postal, automotive, and baggage handling. This series covers most non food conveying.
Van der Graaf rates the drive for 80,000 hours of continuous operation before maintenance and the gear reducer at 96 percent mechanical efficiency, with gears honed and ground to DIN6. On TM127 and larger, an internal electromagnetic brake allows 45 start and stop cycles per minute.

Series 03 · GrizzlyDrive
GrizzlyDrive Series, bulk handling and heavy duty
12.5 to 36 inches, 5 to 500 HP. Aggregate and underground mining, ship loading, and power generation.
Van der Graaf IronGrip lagging is a patented option on this series: metal bars welded lengthwise along the drum with hot bond vulcanized rubber between them, so the rubber cannot wear below the bars. They claim 40 percent more traction and no delamination. Available with or without ceramic tiles.

Series 04 · IntelliDrive
IntelliDrive, permanent magnet technology
4.5 to 6.5 inches, rated by torque rather than horsepower. Permanent magnet motor technology, and it requires a variable frequency drive to operate. Van der Graaf claims 40 percent higher electrical efficiency than a conventional external drive.
Because IntelliDrive is specified by torque and belt speed rather than by horsepower, there is no model table to compare against. Tell us the conveyor and the duty cycle and we will size it with you.
Reading a Model Number
What the letter and number after the drum size means
It is the end flange style and the shaft size. A TM160B40 is a 6.5 inch drum with a B style end flange and a 40 shaft. Van der Graaf drum motors mount in brackets rather than on a separate gearbox, so the letter tells you how the unit sits in its housings, and the number tells you the shaft size, measured corner to corner rather than across the flat.
TM160 is the drum, 6.5 inches.
B is the end flange style, and 40 is the shaft size.

How Specifying Works
Every motor is built for your conveyor
Nobody sells a drum motor off a shelf, and there is a good reason for that. Belt width, belt speed, load, incline, voltage, shaft configuration, lagging, and belt profile all change the build, and every one of them changes the part number. The motor that is right for a washdown line in a packing shed is the wrong motor for a parcel sorter.

Sizing and specifying a drum motor
What size drum motor do I need?
It depends on belt width, belt speed, load, and incline, not on the pulley currently in the conveyor. Send us those four and we will size it. If you are replacing an existing drum motor, the model number on the tag is the fastest path.
What does the letter and number after the model mean?
